چکیده

BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine if mandibular parameters (gonial angle, bigonial width and ramus height) measured from panoramic radiographs, can be used to determine a correlation with an individual's age and gender in dentate subjects in Far North Queensland. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study utilised 2699 randomly selected panoramic radiographs of patients between the ages of 19-69 years, from which 220 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Each panoramic radiograph was analysed and the above three parameters recorded and measured. These values were collated into appropriate age and gender groups and subjected to statistical analysis. RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 44.1±14.41, with males being shown to have a statistically significant larger ramus height and bigonial width than females (P<0.0001 for both). Females, on the other hand, were shown to have a significantly larger gonial angle than males (P<0.0002). General trends revealed gonial angle to increase with age, whilst bigonial width and ramus height were shown to decrease with age. CONCLUSIONS The assessment of mandibular morphology through radiographic measurements may be useful in estimating an individual's age and gender when comparing to a known population standard. KEY WORDS Bigonial width, gonial angle, panoramic radiograph, ramus height.

Mandibular Dimensional Changes with aging in Three Dimensional Computed Tomographic Study in 21 to 50 Year old Men and Women

Introduction: Raising the knowledge of skeletal and soft tissue changes with aging has been highly essential due to an increasing demand for aesthetic facial surgery following aging. The aim of this study is to evaluate the three dimensional computed tomographic images and process of changes in mandible with aging. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, the facial CT scans were obta...

Evaluation of the Correlation of Ramus Height, Gonial Angle, and Dental Height with Different Facial Forms in Individuals with Deep Bite Disorders

BACKGROUND Restoring the vertical dimension is a critical procedure in prosthetic dentistry. Anterior facial height has a significant impact on the length of the ramus. Patients with deep bite will exhibit a shorter lower facial height; hence, restoring the vertical dimension esthetically without altering the facial form is highly challenging. AIM To evaluate the relationship of gonial angle,...

Correlation between Mandibular Radiomorphometric Parameters and Gonial Angle size in Iranian Adults

Introdouction: The purpose of the present study was to determine the possible relationship between gonial angle size and three mandibular morphometric parameters, namely, panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mandibular cortical width (MCW), and antegonial notch depth (AD), in digital panoramic radiographs. Materials and methods: PMI, MCW, and AD were calculated in digital panoramic radiographs of...

Effects of Edentulism on Mandibular Morphology: Evaluation of Panoramic Radiographs

PURPOSE The objective of this study was to evaluate morphological changes of the mandible in edentulous and dentate subjects using panoramic radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Panoramic radiographs were divided into the following three groups: Group I (completely edentulous group), Group II (old dentate group) and Group III (young dentate group). The research parameters of gonial angle, condy...

Assessment of the Relation of Mandibular Cortical Index and Gonial Angle Size in an Adult Iranian Population Using Digital Panoramic Radiography

Objectives: This study sought to assess the relation of mandibular cortical index (MCI) with age, gender and gonial angle size in an Iranian adult population using digital panoramic radiography. Methods: We evaluated 370 digital panoramic radiographs of patients and divided them into five 10-year age groups. Each radiograph was assigned to low (≤120°) or high (≥125°) angle grou...
